1st Day Recap

A great first day, everybody! You succesfully navigated registration and enjoyed a beautiful ingathering sermon by Janice Marie Johnson and an introduction to the seminar’s activities by co-chairs Jennifer Channin and Kasey Neiss. Bruce Knotts and Marilyn Mehr spoke briefly on the work of the UU-UNO and Zoya Craig introduced ideas for follow-up activities you can participate in when you all go back home. The first round of touch groups led to fruitful discussions on perspectives on peace.

A small group attended a luncheon with Amb. Prudence Bushnell in the Delegates’ Dining Hall while others enjoyed lunch in the neighborhood and browsed the UN bookstore. An outstanding panel on sustainable peacebuilding followed lunch with Bushnell, Simone Monasebian, and Sam Cook. A video of the panel will be uploaded shortly.

We moved from the UN to the Community Church where everyone watched “Sometimes in April”, a moving film on the Rwandan genocide. Before breaking into Touch Groups to reflect on the film, everybody enjoyed a pizza dinner and continued to meet other participants in the Seminar. Touch Groups allowed for discussion of the film as well as the day’s earlier panel and the feelings and thoughts they evoked. At the end of the night, the Youth headed back to All Souls for an ice cream party.

  1. Here is a facebook page that Kelly Pryde and I created to spread peace throughout the world. Please join and invite your friends and neighbors. We hope someday to hear from people in cultures all around the world. Peace be with you.

Right now, to get onto the page on Facebook, search for Kelly Pryde. Later we will update the search word and name and we will let you know what it is. If you have any suggestions or questions, please email us at leadersofpeace@gmail.com

    Thank-you!!!!

  2. On the car ride home we decided our team’s follow up action would be to start a campaign to pay our portion of US UN dues. We are going to start on a congregational level asking everyone to pay their two dollars and then reach out to the other community churches before making a town wide effort. Our first step is of course to research any other efforts in this area and to complete Adam’s Action Plan. Please share any suggestions with us by e-mailing Jay at jaystarr@gmail.com.

  3. I had a wonderful time at the Seminar it was an eye opening experience to many events and things that are occurring all over the world. I am looking forward to continuing to learn more and do more the UU-UNO. I was unable to find the Facebook group that was created for the seminar so in any one has that link I would like to continue the conversation with all the other youth I met at the seminar.

    Thank you,

    Rachel Silver

  4. Follow Up Action: To become a dues paying member congregation of the UN by collecting $2 from each congregation member. We will follow this by working with other faith based groups in our community and then the village at large. We are interested in doing this in partnership with other UU congregations, please e-mail us at jaystarr@gmail.com if you would like to work on this with us.

    Fair Winds,

    Jay, Sampath, Miranda, Maia, Deanna
